Lodewijk van der Helst was born in Amsterdam, the son and pupil of Bartholomeus van der Helst.  He grew up at Nieuwmarkt. Documents reveal that in early 1671 he and his sister Susanne assisted their mother when, following his death, they visited their father's studio, located near ... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walloon_Church,_Amsterdam" title="Walloon Church, Amsterdam">Walloon church behind "Vleeshal", where his belongings were registered.  The official list of items show Lodewijk was clearly exposed to notable works of literature as well as important works of art acquired by his father. Documents show that his father owned many painting, quite a number by Willem van de Velde the younger.  He also amassed a large collection of famous books and works of literature such as the schilder-boeck by Karel van ManderMetamorphoses by Ovid, and works by SerlioScamozziVitruvius and Palladio; and portraits, many of Dutch admirals, such as Egbert Bartholomeusz Kortenaer, etc., all of which would have been available to Lodewijk for study.

Lodewijk van der Helst married in 1677, and the family lived on Herengracht. Few details of his life are known.  But in 1680 a son Lodewijk was baptized, and it appears that that same year his wife died. In 1682, he requested the city magistrate’s permission to auction off some paintings publicly, as he was ill and in debt.  Documents record the deaths of his children a few years later, and not surprisingly he appears to have left the city by 1684. His place and date of death are unknown. Works by Lodewijk van den Helst are rarely seen at auction even though he was clearly a very accomplished painter, known especially for portraits. A notable example is his powerful portrait of admiral Augustus Stellingwerf which was engraved by Abraham Blooteling.  The powerful painting now hangs in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam
